Welcome to Tummytime!
This is an educational website for parents to learn about the importance of putting baby on their tummy from an early age to assist with baby developing new skills and to help decrease the incidence of plagiocephaly (baby flat head syndrome).
Why?
The introduction of the "back to sleep" campaign has been paramount in reducing the SIDS rate all over the world – which is a wonderful thing!
However it has also eclipsed the importance of tummy time for babies and the rate of Plagiocephaly or cranial asymmetry (flat spots) on the heads of babies has been increasing from 10 to 48% of all babies.
Research also shows that there has been an increase in motor delays in
babies as they are spending too much time on their backs. This is partly due to
SIDS guidelines and also due to our lifestyles when we have a new baby. Many
car seats conveniently attach to the pram or make it easier to leave baby in –
and so baby is not picked up and carried in our arms much anymore.
